In our June 2016 subject information update we included details of the withdrawal of our legacy AS and A Level Classics qualifications along with information about our new, reformed qualifications.
In response to your feedback, and following further discussion with Ofqual, we have amended our withdrawal plan to allow candidates to combine Ancient History and Classical Civilisation units as part of our 'new legacy' AS and A Level Unendorsed Classics qualification in June 2018.
We have created new certification codes as follows:
The only assessment opportunity (first time entries) to use these new certification codes will be June 2018. (Please note that Latin and Classical Greek units cannot be used towards Unendorsed Classics.) If you have candidates taking AS or A Level Classics in June 2017, (or resits in June 2018), please ensure the certification codes H038 or H438 are used.
The following qualifications will all have a final assessment opportunity (first time assessment) in June 2018, with a resit opportunity in June 2019:
*These qualifications have not changed in terms of content, structure or assessment.
The Classics specification, available on the qualification page, provides further guidance (including a table on page 5) showing how the specification codes are changing in each assessment series.
Please ensure you are aware of the final assessment opportunities for the different pathways through this specification. The final assessment opportunity for each route through the specification is detailed in the tables below.
For qualifications that begin first teaching in September 2016, Latin and Classical Greek units cannot contribute towards the certification of the unendorsed Classics qualifications, Classics: Latin or Classics: Classical Greek.
For candidates wishing to study Latin or Classical Greek, we have developed new specifications for first teaching from September 2016:
For candidates wishing to study Ancient History and Classical Civilisation, we are developing new specifications for first teaching from September 2017:
Please note: In the new AS and A Level qualifications, components from different subject areas cannot be combined. Therefore, we will not be offering a direct replacement for our AS and A Level Unendorsed Classics qualification.
