Teaching of the first tranche of new qualifications began in September 2015 and the first available assessment for the new AS Levels will be June 2016 series. As you start to think about entering the first learners for the new AS Levels, I wanted to clarify some of the expectations.
As many of you will know, legacy AS and new AS qualifications will both be available in this series for the first tranche of reformed subjects. Ofqual has confirmed that current Year 12 students should be taught the new reformed AS and A Levels from September 2015 onwards, rather than beginning an AS or an A Level legacy qualification.
In general, learners should be entered for the reformed AS qualifications wherever possible. This particularly benefits learners who initially intend only to sit the AS, but subsequently decide to progress to A Level so they don’t need to transfer to the reformed A Level (and cover a significantly different course).
However, we appreciate there are legitimate reasons why some learners will be entered for legacy AS qualifications in the June 2016 series. For example, if learners are undertaking an A Level in one year, they would need to take the legacy A Level (AS and A2 units) in 2016 because assessment for the first tranche of reformed A Levels is not available until June 2017.
You may also have some learners who started an AS Level in 2014 and who are completing it over two years rather than one.
