Draft specifications for the OCR Classics Suite for first teaching in September 2008 were published last week.
They include a variety of pathways leading to four distinct A Levels in Latin, Classical Greek, Classical Civilisation and a new subject title, Classics.
The new package of qualifications does not include Ancient History. However, the new Classical Civilisation specification offers units with a focus on history of the ancient world.
By choosing either Classics or Classical Civilisation, students will have a flexible range of unit options, allowing students to focus on the classical Greek or Roman worlds, or to specialise in areas such as archaeology art and architecture, history, literature or culture and society.
Students looking to focus on historical study will still find what they are looking for, with units requiring in depth study of Roman Britain, Greek Historians (Herodotus, Thucydides and Plutarch), City Life in Roman Italy and The Age of Augustus.
OCR is committed to enabling students to study Classics and we are the only awarding body still offering a comprehensive suite of A Levels in this field.
Draft specifications for all of the new-style A Levels can be found here.
