Exam board OCR has created a new specification for A Level English which includes the opportunity for teachers to select their own texts alongside traditional classics, in a move which could see historical literary writers studied side-by-side with Richard and Judy Book Club favourites such as Geraldine Brooks and William Boyd.
While English teachers are typically among the most passionate about their subject, the chance for them to share favourite texts with students has historically been limited by prescribed set texts.
Following extensive work with teachers, OCR has introduced the flexibility to propose and teach their own texts within key modules of the course specification. Now the exam board is launching a nationwide survey of teachers to gain their views on which texts they would like to teach.
