Real world at heart of new GCSEs Monday 15 September 2008

We are delighted to launch our new range of accredited GCSEs. The specifications include a new GCSE in Law which enables students to engage with topics as diverse as consumer rights, police powers and civil liberties.

Parool Patel, Head of GCSE Project, said: "At the core of all our new GCSEs is accessible and relevant content which is designed to provide opportunities for students to develop as critical and reflective thinkers."

The final accredited specifications offer flexible assessment methods that allow teachers to choose the best learning approach for students.

Additionally, controlled assessment replaces coursework for those GCSEs continuing with internal assessment.

OCR estimates that more than 5,100 schools and education centres will start teaching the redeveloped GCSEs from September 2009, with approximately 625,000 students benefiting from a more bespoke approach to assessment and updated content.
