Functional Skills

Functional Skills are practical skills in English, Maths and ICT that help learners gain the most out of work, education and everyday life. OCR is running a three year pilot for Functional Skills in all three subjects at all levels – Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2.

Pilot Functional Skills qualifications

Overview

These qualifications have been introduced to address employers' concerns that young people and adults are not achieving a firm grounding in English, Maths and ICT as outlined in the 14-19 Education and Skills White Paper by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Having good skills in these subjects help learners to be more effective in a range of work and life activities, for example, delivering a presentation using software, discussing ideas with friends or a new employer, using online banking or hunting for Spanish classes in your local area.

Functional Skills qualifications will be available as free-standing qualifications and are an integral part of the new Diplomas and Apprenticeship.

Who will benefit and how?

Learners, employers and higher education will benefit from these qualifications.

  • Learners: Young people and adults will develop vital problem-solving skills ensuring they are well equipped for success in employment, further learning and life.
  • Employers: Functional Skills will help to ensure that employees are able to apply fundamental problem-solving skills in work situations, improving effectiveness and productivity.
  • Higher Education: Being competent in English, Maths and ICT will help students progress and will give them an improved capacity for independent learning.
