Explanation of the main changes

Following extensive consultation, the main changes to OCRs new GCSEs are:

  • Flexible assessment to give teachers the opportunity to choose the best learning approach to suit the student
  • Updated content to make courses more relevant and engaging to learners, bringing real-life into the classroom
  • Controlled assessment will replace coursework and be a feature of almost all GCSEs
  • Functional Skills will be included in the revised GCSEs in English, ICT and Maths, for first teaching from 2010.
