Overview

This course is intended to challenge the most able Business candidates by providing an opportunity to demonstrate a greater depth of understanding than that required at Advanced GCE or VCE level.

The AEA in Business does not require additional teaching or resources, and is intended to be taken alongside either GCE Business Studies or AVCE Business, regardless of awarding body. There is no prescribed content for the qualification, as the study undertaken for either GCE or AVCE will be a sufficient basis to prepare for the exam. The skills tested will be the same, but the focus of the question paper will be on the candidate's depth of understanding.

The AEA in Business will assess candidates' abilities to apply and communicate effectively their knowledge and understanding of Business using the skills of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis in order to reach clear, logical and coherent judgements.

Assessment of the qualification consists of one three hour examination. Candidates will answer one compulsory question, and one additional question from a choice of four. An unseen case study will accompany the question paper, containing a range of data based on a real business scenario. Both parts of the written examination will focus on the material contained in this case study.

The award will be on a two-point scale: distinction and merit. Candidates who do not reach the minimum standard for merit will be recorded as ungraded. These grades are totally independent of the qualifications being taken alongside them, whether it be AVCE or AS/A2, and will not effect any other marks.

The qualification is suitable for candidates who intend to proceed to further study in any discipline at university or who wish to proceed to employment.
