Overview

This course forms part of the vocationally-focused GCEs. This more broad-based qualification provides a more vocational perspective allowing students to interact with the business environment and experience real authentic business practices. The course also offers students, the choice to personalise their path of study and obtain a qualification that meets both their individual aptitudes, and interests. The pathways students can choose include Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Production, ICT in Business and Business Environment.

Prior knowledge of the subject is not essential. The course prepares students to enter a variety of business-related degree level courses, or provide futher training whilst in employment.

Specification aims

The aims of these specifications are to encourage students to develop knowledge and understanding of:

  • Practical skills: personal organisation and time management; ICT skills.
  • Presentational skills: producing a business report; making an oral presentation.
  • Personal skills: initiative; creativity; perserverance; willingness to learn and progress.
  • Interpersonal skills: working in teams, discussing problems or issues, leading a team.
  • Cognitive skills: investigative and research skills, problem solving, decision making, using theory to analyse a real organisation, planning a project.
  • The practices and techniques used within marketing, finance, operations management, human resource management and the links between them.
  • The processes, attractions and risks of setting up an enterprise.
  • The relationship between the business and the changing external environment.
  • Social and ethical issues in business.
  • Contribute to the development of the skills required for success as an entrepreneur manager or employee.
  • Apply numerical and written business techniques to a variety of business contexts.
  • Explore business problems and learn to identify possible solutions.
