Overview

This course is designed to offer students the opportunity to acquire some understanding of the culture, politics and social life of Greece at significant periods in history, whilst studying elements of the language and literature of the Classical World and its influence on modern societies.

Other subjects which go well with Classical Greek are English, Mathematics, History, Ancient History, Classical Civilisation and Latin.

Students who have previously studied Classical Greek will find it helpful, however, this course is also suitable for those who have no prior knowledge of the subject.

Specification aims

The aims of these specifications are to encouarge students to:

  • Develop an appropriate level of competence in the chosen language and a sensitive and analytical approach to language generally.
  • Develop an awareness of the influence of the classical languages on the languages of today and of their distinctive modes of expression.
  • Read, understand and make an informed personal response to literature in the original language.
  • Make an informed response based on evidence from the material studied using written and, where appropriate, other means of communication.
  • Progress to Higher Education courses in Latin/classical Greek, whether linguistic or non-linguistic.
