Overview

This course is designed to encourage students to develop further their understanding of appropriate micro- and macro-economic aspects of applied economics. The course allows students to acquire the knowledge and understanding of the tools of economic analysis and the skills to analyse and evaluate decision-making by consumers, producers, citizens and governments.

The course offers a sound basis for progression into higher education in Economics, or related subjects including, Business Administration, Environmental Planning, Transport and Logistics and European Studies. This qualification also offers students the opportunity to enter directly into employment, particularly in the field of business and the professional service sector.

No previous study of, or qualification in, this subject is required.

Specification aims

The aims of these specifications are to encourage students to:

• Understand current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect their lives.
• Develop their understanding of economic concepts and theories and the ability to apply these concepts to an appropriate range of issues.
• Use contemporary applications and issues to develop understanding of relevant concepts and an appreciation of their value and limitations in explaining present day economic problems.
• Analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it.
• Apply their understanding of Economics to aspects of the recent performance of the UK economy, the rest of the European Union and the rest of the world.
• Be able to think as economists, see the relationship between different aspects of the subject and apply the economists' 'tool kit' in a meaningful way.
