Withdrawal of cassettes

A phased withdrawal of cassettes and introduction of CDs using mp3 format will be put in place from 2008. The January 2008 series is unaffected by the phased withdrawal. For more information about these changes, please read the full notice to centres (PDF, 50 Kb).

Overview

This couse is designed for students who wish to further develop the skills of reading and writing in Gujarati. Students learn about the culture of Gujarati speaking countries and to communicate effectively with people in these countries.

The course is aimed at those who have already achieved GCSE Gujarati grade C or equivalent and wish to go onto Higher Education or directly into employment. Both AS GCE and Advanced GCE in Gujarati offer prospective employers evidence of a significant command of the language.

Specification aims

The aims of these specifications are to encourage students to:

  • Develop students` ability to understand the written form of the language from a variety of registers.
  • Communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in the foreign language through the written word using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language.
  • Demonstrate flexibility when communicating in writing.
  • Increase students`sensitivity to language and language learning.
  • Develop students`insights into, and encourage contact with, the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries or communities whose language is being studied.
  • Provide a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of the foreign language in employment.
  • Provide a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for students who do not progress to further study in the subject.
  • Develop positive attitudes to foreign language learning.
  • Provide a sufficient basis for the further study at degree level or equivalent.
  • Explore and develop understanding of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of one or more of the countries or communities whose language is being studied.
  • Read and respond to a variety of written texts from authentic sources.
  • Use appropriate registers in written communication.
  • Manipulate the foreign language accurately to organise facts and ideas, present explanations, opinions and information in writing.
  • Understand and apply the grammatical system and a range of structures as detailed in the AS specification.
  • Transfer meaning from the foreign language into English and vice versa. (Whichever skill is not assessed in AS must be assessed in A2).
  • Understand and study in greater depth aspects of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of one or more of the countries or communities whose language is being studied, demonstrating a high level of critical awareness.
