Overview

This course is designed to develop students' understanding of the fundamentals of ICT and provide the knowledge and skills suitable for the participation in an evolving information-based society. Throughout the course, students acquire a sound knowledge in systems analysis and design, methods of implementation, testing and documentation as well as demonstrating the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Students also increase their abilities to address the social and ethical issues of technological advancements.

Previous study of the subject is not essential, although some knowledge of the subject at GCSE level or equivalent, will be of benefit to the student.

This course provides students with the foundation needed to meet the requirements of today's workplace particularly in the new and exciting careers, such as multimedia production.

Specification aims

The aims of these specifications are to encourage students to:

  • Develop an understanding of the use of ICT in processing data in a variety of organisations and situations.
  • Develop an understanding of the effects of the use of ICT on the data processing and communications systems within and between organisations and individuals.
  • Develop an understanding of the range of hardware and software tools that may be used to create an effective ICT system.
  • Develop an understanding of the principles of human-computer communication and computer-computer communications which result in advanced systems.
  • Acquire the skills necessary to tailor applications software to meet the needs of given situations and users.
  • Develop skills of analysis and design when faced with new problems that may yield to an ICT solution.
  • Be systematic in the production of solutions with testing, evaluation and documentation that is appropriate both to the users of the system and those who have to maintain it.
  • Develop their capacity to apply knowledge learnt to different contexts.
  • Develop project and time management skills and communication skills when producing solutions for a third party.
