Overview

This course is designed to offer students the opportunity to study language and literature aspects of the Classical world. Throughout the course, students acquire an understanding of the culture, politics and social life of Rome and/or Greece at significant periods of their history.

Latin may complement the study of other subjects relating to language and history. Previous knowledge of Latin is not required for this course.

Specification aims

The aims of these specifications are to encourage students to:

  • Develop an appropriate level of competence in the chosen language and a sensitive an analytical approach to language generally.
  • Develop an awareness of the influence of the classical languages on the languages of today and of their distinctive modes of expression.
  • Read, understand an make an informed personal response to literature in the original language.
  • Make an informed response based on evidence from the material studied using written and, where appropriate, other means of communication.
  • Progress to Higher Education courses in Latin/Classical Greek, whether linguistic or non-linguistic.
