Overview

This scheme is for first teaching in September 2004. It provides a complete route of progression through the various strands of mathematics, from AS Level, through to the first year of university work. The following qualifications are available as part of this specification:

  • AS/Advanced GCE in Mathematics (MEI) (3895/7895)
  • AS/Advanced GCE in Further Mathematics (MEI) (3896/7896 3897/7897)
  • AS/Advanced GCE in Pure Mathematics (MEI) (3898/7898)

Candidates who take one of the three suitable combinations of three AS units are eligible for certification in AS Mathematics. Candidates who take one of seven suitable combinations are eligible for certification in Advanced GCE Mathematics. Advanced GCE Further Mathematics is available for those who take 12 units, and Further Mathematics (Additional) is also available at both AS and Advanced GCE for those who take 15 or 18 units.

Two units, Numerical Computation (NC) and Decision Computation (DC), are assessed through computer-based examinations.

This scheme is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of candidates. Distance learning tutoring is available for a limited number of students who would not otherwise have access to Maths or Further Maths.

This specification will be accompanied by a new edition of the Structured Mathematics textbooks, published by Hodder Murray. The MEI website will also have extensive on-line materials to support this specification, including coursework resources.

Key changes from current GCE Mathematics (MEI) specifications:

  • Advanced GCE Mathematics to consist of four pure units (C1-C4) and two applied units.
  • AS Mathematics to consist of two pure units and one applied unit - all at AS Level.
  • Advanced GCE Mathematics to be either four AS and two A2 units or three AS and three A2 units.
  • AS Further Mathematics to be possible with three AS units.
  • The core unit in Further Mathematics is an AS unit suitable for teaching alongside C1 and C2.
  • The Maths and Further Maths can be taught concurrently from the start of year 12.
  • Examinations (apart from DC and NC) will last one and a half hours and carry 72 marks.
  • No coursework in AS Maths.
  • Coursework (worth 18 marks) in three units only:
    • Solutions of equations in C3
    • Differential Equations
    • Numerical Methods.
  • Re-sit rule disappears.
  • Reduction in the number of allowed specification titles.

Training

Training is available from MEI. Details are on their website, www.mei.org.uk. Bernard Murphy or Stella Dudzic will be pleased to discuss your training needs with you; their contact details can be also be found on the MEI website.
