Overview

This course is designed to offer students the opportunity to develop a critical awareness and understanding of the media and the role it plays in society. Throughout the course, students demonstrate understanding of technical skills in their own media production and engage in creative, imaginative and aesthetic activity.

The course is aimed at those who have already achieved GCSE level in English , English Literature or equivalent, but not necessarily in Media Studies.

Media Studies complements well the study of many other related subjects, including, Communication Studies, Film Studies, Art and Design and English Literature. In addition, the course provides an excellent foundation for further study in media related courses in higher education.

Specification aims

The aims of these specifications are to encourage students to:

  • Foster students' understanding of methods used to construct meaning, through analysis and production of a range of media texts.
  • Develop students' knowledge and understanding of media institutions, production processes, technologies and audiences, and their ability to apply that knowledge to specific instances of media.
  • Enable students to apply critical understanding of how social groups are represented (and represent themselves) in the media.
  • Develop students' technical skills and ability to be creative and communicate through the production of their own media texts.
  • Enable students to develop appropriate techniques for recording, monitoring and evaluating their own media production processes, in the light of the key concepts studied in the course.
  • Engage students in investigative techniques when undertaking independent media research and analysis.
  • Allow students to develop a range of critical arguments in response to a range of media issues and debates, applying contemporary theories to texts and their contexts.
  • Enable students to refine their technical skills and ability to be creative and communicate through the production of media texts.
  • Develop students' critical evaluative skills to assess the process and outcome of their own media production, drawing on knowledge of media institutions, audiences and critical theories.
