Overview

This specification gives learners a rounded exposure to different aspects of art and design, allowing them to display their abilities in a variety of artistic disciplines and demonstrate their understanding of these contexts.

This qualification forms part of a suite. The other subject areas available are:

• Art and Design: Unendorsed
• Art and Design: Fine Art
• Art and Design: Graphic Communication
• Art and Design: Photography
• Art and Design: Textile Design
• Art and Design: Three-Dimensional Design
• Art and Design: Critical and Contextual Studies

Candidates can enter for the unendorsed course and also any one or more of the endorsed courses.

Specification aims

The aims of these specifications are to encourage candidates to develop:

• Intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers.
• Investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement.
• Independence of mind in relation to developing their own ideas, refining their own intentions and personal outcomes.
• An interest in, enthusiasm for, and enjoyment of art, craft and design.
• The experience of working with a broad range of media, including traditional and new media and technologies.
• An understanding of the interrelationships between art, craft and design processes and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate.
• Experience of working within relevant and real frameworks and, where appropriate, make links to the creative industries.
• Knowledge, understanding and application of art, craft, design, media (traditional and new) and technologies in contemporary and past societies and cultures.
• An awareness of different roles, functions, audiences and consumers of art, craft and design practice.

• AS - Controlled Assignment
• A2 - Personal Investigation
• A2 - Controlled Assignment

How will this qualification be assessed?

Coursework units are internally set and externally moderated. Examined units are externally set through an early release exam paper, internally marked and externally moderated. Learners who follow the endorsed route must pursue the same endorsement at both AS and A2.
