The OCR Certificate in Literacy (available at Levels 1 and 2) is a nationally recognised qualification for basic skills at Levels 1 and 2 of the National Qualifications Framework. This qualification is approved for use by 16-19 learners and adults. The qualification has also received Section 96 approval for use by Key Stage 4 pupils who are assessed by their schools as needing access to a wider range of certification in Key Stage 4 alongside the usual GCSE in English. The qualification aims to develop candidates' ability to apply communication skills in a range of familiar contexts and situations.
To gain certification at levels 1 and 2 candidates must pass an external test. These are multiple choice tests that are externally set by QCA and marked by OCR. There is no requirement to produce a portfolio of evidence.
OCR offers these tests on demand; both paper-based tests and e-tests are available. The key features and benefits of this service include:
Centres are reminded that the test for Adult literacy and Adult numeracy at Levels 1 and 2 is the same test for the equilvalent key skills test. Achievement of the test offers exemption from the test component of the equivalent key skills qualification. This makes key skills an obvious progression route for Adult literacy and numeracy candidates as they will only be required to do the portfolio component.
