Overview

This course is designed to provide opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the catering industry, along with the practical skills which would be of benefit to them if taking up employment in this area.

This qualification will be particularly useful for students undertaking foundation programmes, or for organisations introducing students to the world of work in specific vocational areas.

This course provides progression to other vocational qualifications at Level 1 of the National Framework of Qualifications. The skills developed through the qualification are generic skills and will be transferable to a range of different vocational contexts.

Specification aims

The aims of this specification are to:

  • Develop students' knowledge and understanding of the catering industry.
  • Develop students' knowledge of the career opportunities available in the catering industry.
  • Help students to develop skill in using a variety of catering equipment.
  • Help students to develop skill in cooking and serving food.
  • Help students to develop an awareness of health and safety issues in a catering environment and to prepare them for employment in a catering workplace.
  • Encourage the development of practical skills which would enhance students' employability.
  • Encourage progression by assisting in the development of the skills and knowledge which students will need to undertake further study.
