Overview
This course is designed or those students whose needs are not catered for by a GCSE in Mathematics. However, the course can provide a suitable basis for progression towards a GCSE in Mathematics and towards Level 1 Key Skills.
This qualification is divided into three stages, in which students are assessed, enabling them to demonstrate different levels of achievement in specific areas.
The course will assess achievement at levels 1, 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum.
Specification aims
The aims of this specification are to encourage students to:
- Meet mathematics in practical contexts which they will find motivating and relevant to adult life.
- Consolidate their basic mathematical skills and to meet challenges that are appropriate to the level of their mathematical understanding.
- Apply mathematical knowledge and understanding to solve problems.
- Apply mathematical concepts to situations arising in their own lives.
- Work co-operatively, independently, practically and investigatively.
The Stage Assessments in the scheme specifically aim to:
- Provide a series of progressive, accessible targets which can be attempted when students are ready, and which give students a sense of achievement and progress.
- Provide targets which are challenging, but at the same time attainable.
- Make the mathematical content which the assessment tests relevant to the students and as realistic as possible.
- Provide information on students' mathematical progress, not only to teachers, parents and prospective employers, but also to the students themselves.
- Reference students attainment to criteria, in the form of statements which are clear and unequivocal.
