Withdrawal of cassettes

A phased withdrawal of cassettes and introduction of CDs using mp3 format will be put in place from 2008. The January 2008 series is unaffected by the phased withdrawal. For more information about these changes, please read the full notice to centres (PDF, 50 Kb).

Overview

This course is designed to provide an opportunity for those students who would be unlikely to achieve a grade at GCSE.

The course covers ten topics taken from the five contexts for GCSE Modern Foreign Languages. For each of the topics there is a test in:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

The qualification assesses achievement at levels 1, 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum.

This Entry Level qualification enables students to progress either directly to employment or to Foundation Level courses within the National Framework for Qualifications.

Specification aims

The aims of this specification are to:

  • Develop students' ability to understand and communicate in the target language.
  • Encourage students to acquire language learning skills.
  • Encourage students to understand language in its cultural context.
  • Encourage enjoyment and intellectual stimulation and to provide a basis for further study.
