This course provides candidates with an introduction to the mathematics studied in AS and A Level GCE modules. It is designed for those students who have a thorough knowledge of the content of the Higher Tier of the National Curriculum for Mathematics. They should have achieved, or be expected to achieve, grade A*, A or B at GCSE.
The content consists of four areas in Pure Mathematics
Each of these is used to support a topic from a recognised branch of Applied Mathematics.
The assessment is by a single 2 hour examination in the Summer of each year, with grades A, B, C, D, E or U available. There is no coursework. Candidates are permitted to use a scientific or graphical calculator in the examination for this unit. Computers and calculators with computer algebraic facilities are not permitted.
As an Advanced Level FSMQ it carries UCAS points (grade A 20 points, grade B 17 points, grade C 13 points, grade D 10 points, grade E 7 points). This qualification also carries Performance Table Points (grade A 45 points, grade B 40 points, grade C 35 points, grade D 30 points, grade E 25 points). Candidates may not enter in the same session as any Advanced GCE Mathematics unit.
