Overview

Functional Skills are practical skills in English, Maths and ICT that help learners gain the most out of work, education and everyday life. OCR is running a three year pilot for Functional Skills in all three subjects at all levels - Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2.

Functional English encourages learners to be confident and capable when using the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and enables them to communicate effectively, adapting to a range of audiences and contexts.

All learners aged 14 and above, including young people and adults would benefit from functional English in order to explain information clearly and succinctly in speech and writing, expressing a point of view reasonably and effectively.

The Sample Assessment Materials for English will aid your understanding and assist in the delivery of Functional Skills. Sample Assessment Materials for Entry Level will be available shortly.

How is the qualification assessed?

In order to use English effectively in everyday life, learners must demonstrate that they can read and understand information and instructions and then analyse how ideas and information can be presented, evaluating their usefulness. Learners must also demonstrate that they can make an oral presentation or report, contribute to discussions and use speech collaboratively in teams to agree actions and conclusions. These skill areas will form the basis of the assessment within 'real-life' contexts.

The assessments will cover the requirements of the standards at the level being assessed i.e. Entry Level, Level 1 to Level 2. The OCR assessment papers will be task-based.
