Overview

GCSE in Applied ICT (Double Award) is one of a number of GCSEs in vocational subjects designed to offer students the opportunity to widen their participation in vocationally related learning. It provides students with the techical knowledge, skills and understanding needed in the workplace or in further education or training. Studying ICT in a vocational context helps prepare students for a world increasingly dominated by the use of ICT systems, which influence all aspects of everyday life. It also acts as a proxy for the Information Technology Key Skill.

This qualification is suitable for pre-16 and post-16 learners in full-time or part-time education who have a vocational interest in the use of ICT, and have followed the National Curriculum Key Stage 3 Programme of Study for ICT.

This qualification has been developed as the replacement for Foundation and Intermediate Part One GNVQs. It is accredited at Levels 1 and 2 (Foundation and Intermediate) of the National Qualifications Framework and provides students with a progression route to courses specific to the use of computers and new technology including Foundation and Intermediate GNVQs, NVQs at Levels 1 2 and 3, VCE, GCE and other vocational and occupational courses.

Specification aims

The aims of this specification are to encourage the students to:

  • Develop a broad range of ICT skills and knowledge of the uses of ICT in vocational contexts as a basis for progression into employment or further learning in ICT-related fields.
  • Build on students previous experience in a number of National Curriculum subjects at Key stages 1, 2 and 3 and will satisfy the requirements of the programme of study at Key Stage 4 for Information and Communication Technology for England.
