Overview

This new qualification replaces the existing OCR GCSE in Applied Science (Double Award) (1497) and is for first teaching from September 2006. First certification will be in June 2008.

GCSE in Applied Science (Double Award) is one of a number of GCSEs in vocational subjects designed to offer students the opportunity to widen their participation in vocationally related learning. The course provides students with the techical knowledge, skills and understanding needed in the workplace, in further education or training.

Students with this qualification could progress to areas of employment as medical technicians, pharmaceutical technicians, work in industry, the service sector or education.

This qualification is accredited at Levels 1 and 2 (Foundation and Intermediate) of the National Qualifications Framework and provides students with a progression route to Foundation and Intermediate GNVQs, NVQ and VCE.

Specification aims

The aims of this specification are to encourage students to develop:

  • The ability to apply skills knowledge and understanding of how science works and its essential role in society.
  • An awareness of how institutions and companies use science in a wide range of essential functions.
  • The ability to apply knowledge and skills to solving scientific problems in a variety of vocational contexts.
