Overview

This course is designed to offer students the necessary breadth and depth of study with the freedom of choice required to accommodate a wide range of abilities, material and resources.

The OCR GCSE Art and Design qualifications are available as both full and short courses and students may enter either of them. The full course requires students to submit work from two or more areas of study, chosen from:

  • Fine Art
  • Graphic Design
  • Photography
  • Textiles
  • Three-Dimensional Design.

The course allows students to progress either directly to employment, or to study for an Advanced level qualification. The course has significant overlap with GNVQs in Art and Design, and therefore, provides a suitable foundation for those also wishing to demonstrate achievement in a vocational context.

Specification aims

The aims of this specification are to encourage students to develop:

  • Creative and imaginative powers, and the practical skills for communicating and expressing ideas, feelings and meanings in art, craft and design.
  • Investigative, analytical, experimental and interpretative capabilities, aesthetic understanding and critical skills.
  • An understanding of codes and conventions of art, craft and design and an awareness of contexts in which they operate.
  • Knowledge and understanding of art, craft and design in contemporary societies and in other times and cultures.
