Overview

GCSE in Health and Social Care: Double Award is one of a number of GCSEs in vocational subjects designed to offer students the opportunity to widen their participation in vocationally related learning.

This is an ideal course for students with an interest in Health and Social Care and the future employment possibilities it could offer them. It gives students a background of both theory and practice within the sector and will provide them with the knowledge and understanding of the structures and practice within the sector and acts as a preliminary course to further education and/or training. This qualification is suitable for both pre-16 and post-16 learners in full-time or part-time education.

This qualification has been developed as the replacement for Foundation and Intermediate Part One GNVQs. It is accredited at Levels 1 and 2 (Foundation and Intermediate) of the National Qualifications Framework and provides students with a progression route to Foundation and Intermediate GNVQs, NVQs at Levels 1 2 and 3 and VCE.

Specification aims

The aims of this specification are to:

  • Prepare students for progression to employment and/or further training in the health, social care and early years sectors through the development of knowledge, skills and understanding needed for work in these sectors.
  • Increase students´ knowledge and understanding of the health, social care and early years sectors through investigation and evaluation of a range of services and organisations.
  • Develop students´ awareness of the influences on an individual´s health and well-being and to highlight the importance of motivation and support when improving health.
  • Encourage students to recognise the importance of the stages of development of an individual and their relationships.
  • Promote a critical and analytical approach to problem solving within the vocational context.
