This course offers students the opportunity to study history and its development, including the study of change and cause over a long period of time. Students then study the subject more in depth by looking at key events, people, changes and issues concerning certain periods of history.
The content of the course focuses on a study of major changes in British society and the national economy. The core is an outline study of developments in agriculture, industry and transport from 1700 to c.1900. It looks at major changes, such as, the decline of the open-field system of agriculture and the growth of the factory system. The thematic studies focus on a single topic, such as, poverty, medicine, surgery and health, and looks at change and continuity over an extended period up to the present day. The course also provides an opportunity for students to study local history.
The course allows students to progress either directly to employment, or to study for an Advanced level qualification.
