Overview

This course is designed to provide students with a framework which covers various aspects of Humanities and incorporates cross-curricular themes, including, Economic and Industrial Understanding, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Health Education.

The course helps students develop a variety of skills such as conducting a simple research project, how to interpret and evaluate evidence, and how to communicate information. All these skills will be useful in a wide range of jobs.

The course allows students to progress either directly to employment, or to study for an Advanced Level qualification including, Sociology, Law and Politics as well as GNVQ courses involving the study of people.

Specification aims

The aims of this specification are to:

  • Stimulate an interest in and understanding of issues that affect human societies, locally, nationally and globally.
  • Encourage active citizenship in a multi-cultural, multi-faith society by developing sensitivity and empathy towards people living in different contexts.
  • Develop awareness that alternative strategies exist for dealing with problems facing contemporary societies.
  • Encourage recognition of the influence of differing values and perspectives in forming judgements about contemporary issues.
  • Develop research and decision making skills through the personal and collaborative investigation of issues.
  • Develop the ability to appreciate and use different types of information.
