This specification will be superseded by a new GCSE Mathematics A specification without coursework, which is for first teaching from September 2007, thus this specification will have final certification in June 2008 with re-sits at both higher and foundation tiers in January 2009.

Overview

This course is designed provide students with an understanding of mathematics and the opportunity to acquire a valuable qualification often requested by employers.

The qualification is available at two levels - Foundation and Higher. The course meets the needs of the National Curriculum and provides the skills that are necessary for students' future careers.

The study of mathematics complements other courses such as, statistics and related sciences. With this qualification, students may progress either directly to employment, or to study for an Advanced Level qualification.

Specification aims

The aims of this specification are to encourage students to:

  • Develop a positive attitude to Mathematics.
  • Consolidate basic skills and meet appropriately challenging work.
  • Apply mathematical knowledge and understanding to solve problems.
  • Think and communicate mathematically- precisely, logically and creatively.
  • Appreciate the place and use of Mathematics in society.
  • Apply mathematical concepts to situations arising in their own lives.
  • Understand the interdependence of different branches of Mathematics.
  • Acquire the skills needed to use technology such as calculators and computers effectively.
  • Work cooperatively, independently, practically and investigationally.
  • Acquire a firm foundation for further study.
