Structure

  • The GCSE is now unitised
  • There are now four units
  • Units A351, A352 and A353 contain two options each
  • Unit A354 (controlled assessment) contains six options
  • The structure of the course has been simplified.
  • Higher and Foundation tiers have been kept
  • There is an option to study a different option within each unit, but this has been simplified.

Content

  • Popular topic areas have been kept and reorganised
  • It is now possible to study only literature or civilisation through the GCSE short course, as well as it being possible to study both.
  • Learners can still study Greek literature and civilisation, or Roman literature and civilisation, or a combination of both Greek and Roman literature and civilisation, as they wish.

Assessment

  • The GCSE can now be sat as either a modular or a linear course, with options to sit examinations in year 10.
  • There are separate papers for the Foundation and Higher tiers
  • There is a reduction in the amount of examination time.
