What are the changes?

While we've made some important changes and improved our GCSEs, we haven't changed everything. Here you can see which aspects of GCSE Latin are changing, and which will stay the same.

Structure

  • Each unit is of equal value
  • Learners take four units to gain the full course
  • Learners take two units to gain the short course.

Content

  • Verse Literature is no longer compulsory
  • For the Full Course the total number of lines of literature is 270 HT and 200 FT if both literature units are taken.
  • For the Short Course, or if one literature unit is taken, the total number of lines of literature is 135 HT and 100 FT
  • There is no coursework unit so source-based study is via examination (Unit A405).
  • All learners take 50% language
  • Language papers have distinct themes.
  • Roman civilisation option is available as source-based study Unit A405
  • Each literature unit offers a choice of prescription

Assessment

  • All units are now examined – therefore Unit A405 replaces the old coursework unit
  • Computer-based testing is now available for Unit A401
  • Short course is now available.
  • Learners have a choice of optional units (A403, A404, A405)
  • Higher and Foundation Tier examination papers are available.
