Overview

If you are already teaching Media Studies you can compare current and revised specifications on the What are the changes? page.

Benefits to you and your learners of teaching this qualification

For centres:

  • Comprehensive support from OCR to help you deliver this course. As well as the support/publisher materials mentioned, there will also be a teacher support handbook created by practising teachers. Schemes of work, lesson plans and exemplar materials will be available on the OCR website
  • Topics will remain the same for at least three years – this helps with planning delivery and building and developing support materials
  • This course provides you with the opportunity to make the most of your resources and media labs. Along with the traditional methods, this course allows students to utilise the latest technology.

For learners:

  • Clear progression route to OCR’s A Level Media Studies – developed in line with our successful A Level qualification, this allows natural movement and progression
  • Students can start to become media specialists:
    • covering at least three different types of media
    • balance of practical and theoretical work
    • experience of working individually or in groups – this is good preparation for higher education and industry.
  • Briefs are engaging and help motivate learners. Eg Video games: Compare how women are represented in Super Mario Brothers and Final Fantasy 7. Students must design a new female video game character for a new platform game and provide a design for the first three screens.

First examination dates

Units B321 and B324 will be available in June series
