Overview

These qualifications are suitable for anyone using language skills in the workplace or anyone in full or part time training.

The National Language Units are free-standing NVQ units. They are achievable at different levels and in any combination, according to the occupation or learning situation of the candidates. They are also achievable within or alongside other NVQ programmes and alongside other qualifications. They aim to meet the needs of anyone wanting to prove their competence in a language other than their own first language.

Since they are NVQ units they operate like all other NVQs in as much as they enable candidates to contextualise evidence in a portfolio. These language qualifications are therefore particularly suitable for applying to specific vocational contexts.

There are sixteen units available for each language covering four skills at four levels of competence:

• Listening - Levels 1 to 4
• Speaking - Levels 1 to 4
• Reading - Levels 1 to 4
• Writing - Levels 1 to 4
