Notice

New NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in Supporting Teaching and Learning

As you may be aware, the current Level 2 and Level 3 NVQs for Teaching Assistants expire for registration on 28 February 2008. The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) have redeveloped the standards on which the NVQs are based, with the result that a new qualification will be launched from 1 March 2008.

Although still aimed at teaching assistants, the new qualifications will be called NVQ (Level 2 or Level 3) in Supporting Teaching and Learning. Full details will be posted under the new title as they become available. Information on the new standards and units for the new NVQs are available now.

Overview

This NVQ is designed to reflect the work of candidates who are experienced teaching assistants and/or whose job role covers a varied range of responsibilities. It is expected that candidates at this level will have some autonomy in their role. The NVQ is suitable for candidates working with pupils of any age in primary, secondary or special schools.

To achieve the full award, candidates must complete ten units, including four mandatory units and six optional units.

These qualifications are very flexible in their structure enabling the organisation and individual to choose the optional units which best suit their work situation and job role.

Like all NVQs these qualifications are competence-based. This means that they are linked to the candidate's ability to competently perform a range of tasks connected with their work. Candidates plan a programme of development and assessment with their assessor and compile a portfolio of evidence to prove that they are competent and knowledgeable in their work role.
