Principles

Asset Languages is a flexible assessment scheme which supports language teaching in primary, secondary and adult education. As an assessment tool which fits around existing schemes of work, Asset can reward a wide range of language learners for what they have achieved.

Flexible features

  • Asset Languages can be used with a wide range of ages and abilities.
  • The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are assessed separately.
  • There are two asssessment options:
  • Assessment can be carried out throughout the year.
  • Fits around existing teaching programmes.

Assessment principles

Asset Languages assesses the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of learners against the Languages Ladder. Asset measures the skills of each learner against the first four stages of the Ladder: Breakthrough, Preliminary, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Asset Languages qualifications are also mapped to the National Qualifications Framework, View the structure page to find out more information.

Asset is based on the 'Can Do' statements (PDF, 256 KB) of the Languages Ladder. These statements describe what learners can do with language at a certain level in terms of actual outcomes such as 'I can take part in a simple conversation and I can express my opinions' or 'I can write a few short sentences with support, using expressions which I have already learnt'.

There are Can Do statements for each stage and for the grades within a stage of the Ladder. They are written so that they can be easily understood by learners and teachers.
