OCR has been at the forefront of developing functional skills assessments. This experience, backed up by extensive research and evaluation from our three year pilot, has given us a unique insight into what functionality means to assessment design. We would like to thank the dedication and commitment of the 1,700 schools, colleges and learning providers who have made all this possible.

Functional skills English is designed to develop and assess functional skills as determined by the functional skills standards. The knowledge, skills and problem-solving approaches contained within each qualification provides tools that can be utilised in work, life and further learning.

This qualification will encourage learners to develop their English skills and transfer skills in ways that are appropriate to their situation.

Functional skills English aims to:

• Provide accreditation of achievements of a range English skills in real-life settings so that learners can use subject skills in a functional way throughout life
• Provide a progression route through to higher achievement.
• Provide a flexible assessment structure that can be adapted to meet the needs of individual learners
