Overview

This is a Free Standing Mathematics Qualification at Intermediate Level developed jointly by OCR and MEI. It is a broad-based course covering arithmetic, algebra, graphs, trigonometry and statistics: this contrasts with other Intermediate FSMQs which look at self-contained areas of the subject in depth.

This course provides access to AS/A Level GCE Mathematics courses for those students who are at present not sufficiently strong to have a reasonable prospect of success.

Assessment is by a two hour examination which consists of 40 multiple choice questions. It is set in January and June of each year. The examination result is reported as a grade A, B, C, D, E or U. Candidates are permitted to use a scientific calculator in the examination of this unit. Computers, graphical calculators and those with computer algebra facilities are not permitted.

This qualification carries Performance Table Points (grade A 24 points, grade B 22.5 points, grade C 21 points, grade D 19.5 points, grade E 18 points), but cannot be counted towards the percentage of KS4 pupils achieving 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C. The examination can be taken in combination with any other qualification.
