Following a coursework review by QCDA, controlled assessment was introduced as part of nearly all GCSEs, to replace traditional coursework from September 2010. It is coursework in a supervised environment or classroom and has been introduced to address some of the issues raised in the reviews, such as plagiarism.
High, medium or low control levels are set for each of the controlled assessment processes - task setting, task taking and task marking. For each stage, the level of control will ensure reliability and authenticity, and make assessments more manageable for teachers and learners.
Weighting of controlled assessments is defined by QCDA subject criteria.
A Guide to Controlled Assessment has been developed to support teaching of our new English and ICT GCSEs.
