Overview

This exciting OCR pilot GCSE Methods in Mathematics is one of the linked pair of GCSEs developed in conjunction with QCDA and designed to be inspiring, motivating and challenging.

In this pilot, the two qualifications - GCSE Applications of Mathematics and GCSE Methods in Mathematics - cover, between them, the entire Key Stage 4 Programme of Study for Maths. Each GCSE is distinctive and contains some additional content to the single GCSE.

They will begin first teaching from September 2010, while first certification will be in June 2011.

Learners will need to sit both the Applications of Mathematics and Methods in Mathematics examination papers and, if successful, they'll gain two GCSE qualifications.

Be part of our linked pair pilot

Up to 100 centres can join our linked pair pilot, so if you'd like to take part, please register your interest by simply emailing us with your centre number, a contact name and an email address at LinkedPairMaths@ocr.org.uk.

On 2 February, there'll also be an opportunity for you to meet us in London to learn more about the pilot.

At the meeting, we'll:

  • Outline the detail and structure of each of our two accredited pilot GCSE specifications: Applications of Mathematics and Methods in Mathematics
  • Consider the additional content (beyond single GCSE Mathematics) and the resource implications
  • Discuss any issues for centres that might arise as a consequence of taking part in our pilot.

We'll fund your travel and subsistence, and can offer overnight accommodation if your journey time to the venue is over three hours away from your centre.

Book your free place now (due to anticipated demand, booking is restricted to one delegate place per centre).

Download our accredited 'linked pair' pilot specifications and sample assessment materials from the all documents page on the right.

Benefits

You and your learners can benefit from our 2 unit GCSE Methods in Mathematics specification because:

  • It will help you bring maths to life by encouraging your learners' awareness of the links between different areas within mathematics and promote the development of an ability to reason logically and develop mathematical arguments.
  • Our specification promotes the teaching and learning of mathematics at Key Stage 4 in schools and provides a suitable one-year post-16 course. It has been designed to provide access to a Grade C in mathematics for all learners.
  • It encourages learners to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods, techniques and concepts and to develop and refine strategies for solving a range of mathematical problems.
  • It has been planned to help learners select and apply mathematical methods in mathematical contexts, reason mathematically, construct arguments and simple proofs, and make logical deductions and inferences.
  • It is designed to help learners make connections between different areas of mathematics and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms
  • It provides a suitable basis for progression to further study in mathematics or related subjects or directly into employment.
