Overview

This course is designed to assess basic computer concepts and skills so that students' knowledge, understanding and skills are recognised and they gain confidence in using computer technology in everyday life.

Whether the student is entirely new to computing or has some experience, this qualification will develop their fundamental understanding of computers.

Tests will be available on demand through OCR's e-testing facility known as i-assess. For further information on administering the tests refer to the e-tests section of the website.

Those students, who are successful in achieving this qualification, may progress to the OCR Level 1 Certificate for IT Users (New CLAIT) or to the Level 1 Key Skill in IT.

Specification aims

The aims of this specification are to:

  • Develop students' understanding of the fundamentals of computing, the components of a computer, operating system basics and how to use a mouse and a keyboard.
  • Develop students' skills in using common software applications for a purpose.
  • Develop students' skills in connecting and using the Internet and email.
  • Develop students' ability to recognise and understand how to reduce risks and threats to computer security and privacy.
  • Develop students' knowledge of new digital technologies, including digital audio, digital video, and digital photography.
  • Develop students' confidence in the use of ICT.
