Approved by QCA as Technical Certificates for the administration sector, these new qualifications are at Levels 2 and 3 of the National Qualifications Framework. They have been designed to accredit the mandatory knowledge, understanding and skills of Apprentices embarking upon Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship programmes in Administration.
The qualifications provide candidates with the essential underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills that would be needed by a competent employee functioning in an administration job role. They go hand-in-hand with the NVQ, but whereas the NVQ draws upon the application of the more practical dimensions, the Awards in Administration provide the breadth of underpinning knowledge required to work in the environment successfully.
Each qualification is made up of two mandatory units. Candidates have the option of achieving either one or both units, as appropriate to their own learning needs or employment situation. It must be noted however, that only the full qualification (ie achievement of both units) has Technical Certificate status.
Unit 1 is assessed by an on-screen, multiple choice test consisting of 30 items, set and marked by OCR. Unit 2 is assessed by an on-demand, assignment which is set and assessed by OCR.
The OCR Level 2 Award in Administration (03790) is aimed at those who already possess a basic knowledge and understanding of administrative practice, but who wish to extend their knowledge. It is also suitable for those who are studying in preparation for employment where they will be expected to work autonomously in carrying out administrative tasks.
For a complete technical certificate, candidates studying on Apprenticeship programmes against the 2005 standards, candidates must, in addition to the Award in Administration, achieve the following units from the OCR Level 2 Certificate for IT Users (CLAiT Plus) - scheme code 05539. Candidates who successfully achieve the CLAiT unit using the Microsoft Office test route can use this as the CLAiT unit within the Certificate in Administration.
Candidates can achieve the CLAiT units using the Microsoft Office tests route, where these are available.
