This qualification has been developed to recognise the knowledge and skills demonstrated by those who support adult learners in the development of literacy skills. It has been designed to develop and accredit both awareness of the wider social and learning issues related to the development of literacy skills and also an advanced level of personal literacy skills. It has been developed to meet the Department for Education and Skills requirements that all new support staff for adult literacy must hold a subject support qualification endorsed by the Further Education National Training Organisation (FENTO).
The qualification aims to develop candidates' skills and knowledge and to recognise their achievements in a practical way that is relevant to the work context. It is anticipated that much of the practical evidence that is required to meet the assessment requirements of the qualification will be naturally occurring.
