Overview

This qualification is appropriate for those who, having achieved the Level 2 Certificate in Exercise and Fitness (or comparable industry award), wish to progress to an advanced level in a gym context.

The qualification is aimed at candidates of 18 years and over. Whilst candidates younger than 18 are not barred, it is likely they will experience difficulty in obtaining the personal liability insurance cover needed to work in this area.

The new qualification comprises 3 Mandatory units:

  • Unit 1 - Advanced Exercise and Fitness Knowledge
  • Unit 2 - Advanced Resistance Training
  • Unit 3 - Advanced Cardiovascular Training

This acts as a progression route from the OCR Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Exercise and Fitness (Scheme Code 01859) and the OCR Level 2 NVQ in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (Scheme Code 03549).

Qualification aims

This qualification specifically aims to:

  • Recognise candidates' understanding of advanced fitness instructing in a gym context
  • Develop candidates' level of interpersonal skills when dealing with advanced fitness instructing issues
  • Provide accreditation for the essential knowledge and understanding needed by a competent employee in an advanced fitness instructor role
  • To build upon candidates' knowledge of anatomy and physiology acquired at Level 2 to an advanced level
  • To develop candidates' ability to plan and deliver gym sessions to the standard required by the industry
  • To enable candidates to develop knowledge of health and safety issues in the exercise and fitness industry
  • To provide an access route to the Level 3 NVQ in Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise.
