Overview

From September 2007, all new entrants to teaching in the Post 19 sector will be required to complete new qualifications which will qualify them to teach and enable them to work towards professional status. The Diplomas in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector are for new teachers where teaching/tutoring/training is their major role, and who will be working in a full teacher role.

All those entering the profession who take on the full responsibilities of a teacher in the sector are performing the full teacher role.

This is defined by LLUK as someone who teaches:

  • using materials they have designed and evaluated
  • across a range of levels, subjects and learner types
  • across or contributes to a range of programmes of varying lengths

Please note: The role is not defined by the number of hours taught, but by the responsibilities undertaken in the teaching role. For more information on the new definitions of teacher roles, visit the LLUK website, the Sector Skills Council for Lifelong Learning.

The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector is for new teachers in a full generic teaching role and is made up of a number of mandatory and optional units, totalling a minimum of 120 credits within the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF).

The Diplomas in Teaching English/Numeracy in the Lifelong Learning Sector are for new teachers who will specialise in teaching either Literacy or Numeracy, and are made up of mandatory units totalling 120 credits within the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF).

The Additional Diplomas in Teaching English/Numeracy in the Lifelong Learning Sector are for teachers who have an existing teaching qualification and who will specialise in teaching either Literacy or Numeracy. The additional Diplomas are made up of three mandatory units totalling 45 credits within the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF).
