Many of the students at the Academy are from families with either low levels of English or none at all. Shireland encouraged these families to join literacy classes where they were taught with the support of their children. These sessions were supported online, so the families could also learn at home. We found that the adults on the programme were more engaged with the community and more employable. The students’ literacy levels and behaviour were vastly improved.
