Increased funding for functional skills was announced at the AoC Conference by Minister for Skills Matthew Hancock.
The increases of more than 100% apply to rates for functional skills in English and maths used with adults in the workplace, either as stand-alone qualifications or within an apprenticeship framework.
The new rates apply to any learning undertaken in the current year, with effect from 1 August 2012. Rates for the 2013/14 year will be confirmed in January.
Mark Dawe OCR Chief Executive said; “These increases are good news for the FE Sector and we are pleased to see this emphasis on supporting English and maths skills. This Autumn, we have enhanced our own functional skills range with more support for teachers and learners as well as preparing for the roll out of our new Progression qualifications in core English and maths skills which will complement functional skills.“
On-screen, on-demand assessments for students taking OCR’s functional skills in English and maths began successfully this October. Additional support is also now available in the form of a new Admin Guide as well as a new diagnostic assessment tool – available free through Interchange – which is designed to help tutors understand the skills that students are competent in and those they still need to improve, in order to complete their studies.
