Following the success of IBM's Apprenticeship scheme launched in 2010, IBM has just recruited a new wave of young apprentices during Apprenticeship Week 2012. Successful IBM apprentices gain OCR IT qualifications in recognition of their skills on completion of a two year training course.
The success of IBM's scheme was celebrated at the launch of a new UK Higher Apprenticeship Programme this week, co-ordinated by e-skills. This initiative aims to develop apprenticeships at Levels 4, 5 and 6, equivalent to university study, and was welcomed by Universities Minister, David Willetts. IBM is one of 20 big name employers supporting the higher level programme.
OCR also sponsored this year's Apprenticeship Programme of the Year award, run by the Learning and Performance Institute. The category attracted a large number of entries. The winner of this year's award is leading IT training provider QA who "demonstrated unequalled levels of innovation, dedication and a commitment to quality through their impressive service provision."
Mark Dawe, OCR Chief Executive, said: "Congratulations to IBM and to QA. We are delighted to be associated with a range of high quality apprenticeship schemes. OCR provides ready-made apprenticeship components and works with employers to create bespoke apprenticeship programmes. We are currently investigating developing qualifications to suit higher level programmes."
OCR's Level 3 IT qualifications that underpin IBM's training cover a broad range of skills, including asset management, info management, systems architecture, software design, ICT systems and data security, to suit IT practitioners across a range of careers. They contribute towards full apprenticeship certification within the IT and Telecomms Apprenticeship Framework.
