Introduction

Overview

Delivery guides are designed to represent a body of knowledge about teaching a particular topic and contain:

  • Content: A clear outline of the content covered by the delivery guide;
  • Thinking Conceptually: Expert guidance on the key concepts involved, common difficulties students may have, approaches to teaching that can help students understand these concepts and how this topic links conceptually to other areas of the subject;
  • Thinking Contextually: A range of suggested teaching activities using a variety of themes so that different activities can be selected which best suit particular classes, learning styles or teaching approaches.

Curriculum Content

Overview

The Freudian Theory of Dreaming:

  • the unconscious mind
  • the role of repression
  • the concept of wish fulfilment
  • manifest and latent content of dreams
  • criticisms of the theory including the issue of subjectivity.

The Freudian Theory of Dreaming Research Study – Freud (1918): dream analysis study of ‘The Wolfman’.

Thinking Conceptually

Overview

General approaches:

This subtopic provides an opportunity for lots of learner participation. Applying the Freudian Theory of dreaming to learners’ own dreams will help to provide context.

Common misconceptions or difficulties learners may have:

Case studies can often be challenging to assimilate due to their qualitative data and quantity of descriptions. Breaking down the key research study into small chunks and using imagery to illustrate is encouraged.

Conceptual links to other areas of the specification – useful ways to approach this topic to set learners up for topics later in the course:

There is a possibility to link research methods in to this sub topic. Learners could design and participate in mini interviews to explore structured and unstructured interview techniques.

Thinking Contextually

Overview

This subtopic provides good opportunities for classroom debates when evaluating, using images for illustration and trying out some of Freud’s ideas on real dreams. For consolidation, making mind maps or flip books help to bring the concepts together.

The Freudian Theory of Dreaming: 2

True – false activity; read the list of statements regarding the key principles of the theory. Learners use mini white boards (or something similar) to express their response.

By way of extension, learners could be asked to elaborate on the statements, explaining how or why it is true or false.

The Freudian Theory of Dreaming: 3

Possible link with research methods. In pairs learners could interview each other about a recent dream. One pair could use a structured interview approach and the other an unstructured. This would then provide the opportunity to evaluate the different types of interview techniques; discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Debate: divide the class with half adopting the role of supporters of Freud and half refuters. A stimulus question relating to criticisms of the Theory of Dreaming is given and the class debate it. Possible areas for debate include subjectivity - objectivity or credible verses non-credible.
