Overview

These qualifications are designed to stretch the most able candidates and are targeted at those who are expecting to achieve a Grade A comfortably in the corresponding A Level. Progression from this award will normally be into higher education.

They are initially being offered in 17 subjects which have been divided between the five awarding bodies. OCR will offer Critical Thinking, English, French and Latin. It is not necessary to take the corresponding Advanced GCE course with the same awarding body.

All AEAs will be externally assessed. Grading will be on the basis of Distinction, Merit or Ungraded. They are based on A Level subject criteria rather than individual specifications and designed to require no additional teaching or resources.

AEAs will replace Special Papers. The Cambridge University STEP will be offered for the final time in Summer 2002, with the exception of Mathematics, which will continue indefinitely.
